On a road trip last winter through the Southwest with my dad, we made the long drive to Monument Valley. Once we got there, the main view of “The Mittens” was entirely covered in fog. Since we only had limited time there, I was pretty bummed out that I wouldn’t be able to photograph it.
Then, as we were driving away, I noticed these three horses standing alone in a field. As I got out of the car and started carefully approaching them, the fog opened up for a minute and revealed the butte in the background. It was a magical moment, and ended up making the lengthy drive worth it. Sometimes, the best photo opportunities happen when you least expect it.
