Late Burn by BrettNickeson

This was one of the best sunsets I’ve witnessed while out shooting and by far the best I saw in my time at Death Valley. It was actually the “second sunset” – I’m sure it has an actual name and explanation – where the initial colors die down, letting you think that’s all she wrote. Then a final blaze of glory lasting only a minute or so, long after you’d expect it. I may have whooped and hollered a time or two after this…

Since I can’t control the placement of the clouds, I tried to find a meaningful composition in the three seconds I felt I had to start shooting. I tried to align the cloud with the diagonal shape of the dune highlights to create a somewhat contiguous shape throughout the image. Not ideal but I thought it turned out pretty well and became my favorite image and experience of the trip.
