东水门桥 by JulienFolcher

The Dongshuimen bridge is one of the latest additions to the city of Chongqing. First time I visited it was still under construction.
The bridge actually comes in three parts, a bridge crossing the Jialing river, a tunnel going under Jiefangbei, and then another bridge crossing the Yangtze river (this part in the photo is the part crossing the Jialing river, you can see the other bridge on the Yangtze in a previous photograph I uploaded, the one with the cable car).

Chongqing nights III by JulienFolcher

During my stay in Chongqing I was able to find some really cool rooftops from where I could get views of the skyline. unfortunately the weather wasn’t on my side and all the sunset were wrapped in a thick layer of fog and pollution.

This one turned out to be better at night, once the yangtze river cruise boats turn their lights on and come and go around the Chaotianmen peninsula.

Initially I was going going for a stack of all the images I took from this roof to maximize the traffic on the river, but once I was editing the images and stacking them it looked very messy. I opted for only one exposure, which looks a lot cleaner actually.

Nanpu bridge by JulienFolcher

Nanpu bridge in Shanghai taken from a nearby residential building rooftop.

This spot was quite hard to access and I got kicked out by security only after a few minutes. But I still had time to snap a few long exposure images :).

This is a stack of 3x30sec images (I decided on this method instead of a 1min 30 sec exposure because I knew security was gonna be here pretty fast to kick me out, potentially in the middle of an exposure).

Let me know what you think 😉

Chengdu skyline by JulienFolcher

The skyline of Chengdu changed so much since I was living there 4 years ago. The city is growing really fast, but unlike many other Chinese cities it has managed to keep its character.

Chengdu is a great city to take photos from rooftops. Most of them are open and easily accessible. I spent most of my nights there sneaking into residential compounds and take photos of the city from the roofs. I wish I stayed longer to get some better weather conditions.

Red Beijing by JulienFolcher

This the last amazing sunset I got to see from my apartment window in Beijing before moving out… The light was incredible.

The afternoon was very polluted, but right before sunset it started to rain a little and the fresh wind from the mountain started to clear the pollution.

I really hated polluted days in Beijing, but under certain condition it could give the sky some crazy colors… I saw an article a while ago saying pollution was giving Beijing some Mars – like sunsets, this is one of them.

Chongqing nights II by JulienFolcher

I didn’t get very lucky with the sunsets during my time in Chongqing, a mix of pollution and fog was always enveloping the city… But night time was very enjoyable, and gave me the opportunity to go to several locations on the same night…

For this photo I managed to sneak in the second tallest office tower of the city and found a whole floor under renovation and unattended. I stayed probably half an hour in the tower, taking photos of the amazing skyline.

午门 by JulienFolcher

Photo from my last visit at the forbidden city before i left Beijing. I was lucky enough to get a nice sunset over the meridian gate.

The emperor believed that the meridian line went right through their palace, making it the center of the universe.

Ghosts on the bridge by JulienFolcher

Hangzhou is the fourth and last city I am visiting for this trip. I will be leaving the country tomorrow, heading to Sydney… Feeling very blue.

I will still be uploading photos of China for a while, I am sitting on a massive pile of unprocessed raw files from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai and Hangzhou.

I haven’t been very lucky with the weather in Hangzhou, it was raining for the whole I was there. Upside is that daytime black and white look awesome, so much atmosphere and very beautiful soft gradients in the sky.
