No wonder why NASA chooses the southwest for testing of their spacecrafts…
Meanwhile in the middle of a sunny day, a severe dust storm sweeps through the Totem Pole area with winds of 50+mph… visibility was extremely poor, time to run to the car.

Approach to the Wave by stevehowa

The Wave is always on everyone’s short list, but the area around the Wave is well worth the trip..

Sitting Pretty by michrojas

Here’s a shot taken from our trip to Utah a month ago. We wanted to test out the 2-person bivy we got from Miles Gear (Uber bivy) and we thought probably one of the best place to break it in is in the high desert! Woke up at 5AM in the 30 degree weather, feeling really cozy inside the bivy that I actually had to force myself to get up. The forecast was clear, which we didn’t mind because what’s best about this place is that there is so much abstracts to shoot that you are not at the mercy of dramatic skies. The vast, open space surrounding this butte is a real treat for anyone craving for solitude.

How The West Was Won by DaniloFaria

Yes, the Navajo Native is real, he is posing, and he is holding a real rifle!!! If you have been to this location you would understand, he “charges” a fee to stand still in this location so people can take an image of this “western scene”, made famous by the movie director John Ford. Someone else paid and I “hitchhiked” and took the picture as well.
Meanwhile, a severe dust storm sweeps through the buttes and the valley with winds of 50+mph… time to run to the car.

Los Gigantes by johnmumaw

*Better on Black*

Los Gigantes Buttes in NE Arizona rise 700′ in tandem from the desert floor, far from any other sandstone monoliths. These twin buttes caught my eye many, many years ago, but I was always photographically challenged by the surrounding desert, which has been severely overgrazed by sheep, goats & feral horses, making it quite unattractive. Then one day I came across a vast sand dune field, which was created by the aforementioned overgrazing. Problem solved. ツ
It took several visits until the monsoonal skies finally cooperated. The wind blown sands lit by the setting sun were the cherry on the cake.
