The Smoking Room by RyanDyar

Smoke from the surrounding wildfires during my two week trip to Glacier NP made itself VERY well known. All day long it was there like some loud drunk frat-dude saying “look at me! I’m here to screw up your good time, bro!”

Fortunately, we were able to use the smoke to our advantage a few times. The smoke can do interesting things to the atmosphere and light color, so not all hope was lost. The haziness in this particular shot was from the fires hundreds of miles away in Washington state… it made the trip across two states to try to screw up my party, but I think I made it work still. Not the most original image ever taken, and a bit predictable for sure… but whatever, I dig it.

Anyways, one of the tours I’m leading in Norway with my good friends Arild and Stian is almost filled, so if you are interested in that trip, now is the time to check it out! I’m willing to bet this trip to the Arctic will be even more productive than our last. I can’t wait!

Also, I just released a new post-processing instructional video a few days back. It’s packed with some unique techniques and theories about processing you may not find anywhere else. People seem to really be enjoying the videos and have had nothing but great things to say, so I *think* they are helping people… it’s been awesome to see the many before/after shots people have been emailing me. Be sure to check the videos out if you are into that sort of thing. It’s all on my website, as well as more photos, photo tour info, processing instruction via Skype like everyone else is doing, etc, etc.

This is definitely one of my favorite images from Glacier NP and it was a complete nightmare to put together. It was taken just after the sun started to fade out a bit. I had seen this patch of flowers way down this slope that resided below a pretty good size snow bank. I hiked down to the area and was greeted by some pretty nasty winds; so much so that with the conditions focus stacking was nearly impossible but I think I managed to pull it off. This one is composed of 9 shots blended by hand for DOF. I hope I was able to convey some of what I felt while being there through this image. The clouds that encircled the peaks were really just unreal.

I have to say after seeing the Enchantments, the North Cascades, the Olympics…. you name it nothing took my breath away like Glacier. I had heard about the park from a number of people and I had always been blown away by photos of the area, but to see it in person is something different all together.

We had just got done hiking out to Avalanche Lake (by hiking I mean playing dodge the thunderstorm) with my GF Kelcee and her dad when we decided to head back to Frittas to grab a beer and wait for her dad’s GF to make it into the park. We hung around for a bit and I was getting a little worried that we wouldn’t make it up to the higher peaks before sunset. With her dad behind the wheel we hauled some serious ass up the road into the park and made it to the first hairpin just as god rays flooded the valley. After getting some photos we hoped back into the truck and floored it to make it up to higher vantage points. Just as we punched through the trees and into the main valley my jaw hit the floor. After picking my jaw up I had do it again when the sky started to blow up all around me. I pulled myself together for a whirlwind of shooting in the area. What made it even more special was that there was literally no one up there, just us and those glorious mountains. I seriously can’t wait to get back to there again; this was one evening of shooting that I seriously will never forget.
