LA VIENNE A CHINON by jeanmhermant

Chinon is a French municipality situated in the department of Indre-et-Loire, in region Centre-Val of the Loire.
Placed on the course of Vienne river, in a strategic position in the borders of Touraine, Anjou and Poitou, endowed with a rocky spur strengthened from the Antiquity, the city, with its impressive fortress, played for a long time a key defensive role. Chinon is one of favorite fortified towns of the Plantagenets. Jean sans terres loses it for the benefit of Philippe Auguste, who adds it to the domains of the Crown of France. Seat of the court yard under Charles VII, place of its meeting with Joan of Arc, the city will leave the royal lap only to pass in the hands of the cardinal of Richelieu and his family, which keepit until the Revolution.

The city is a part of the section of Val-de-Loire registered on the UNESCO world heritage list in conformance with the cultural landscapes.
