The darkness

I have spent years learning how to chase images in the dark. Crawling over rocks, climbing mountains, wading through water, dodging cows, sheep, emu’s, kangaroos, camels and bulls all under the blanket of darkness with nothing but a headlight as my lonely savior. You name it and I feel like I have had to do it at some point.

In this lonely corner of the world I was, again, alone in the dark.

I had arrived at Kelvedon a little after 11pm. It was bone chilling with the wind chill well (well) below zero. All around me was light from waning crescent moon and a quick check of my galaxies map showed that once this moon set, I would presented with a glorious milky way.

I had the gear to keep me warm and nowhere better to be so there was really only one option.

After setting up my tent close by I stumbled around the water’s edge trying to predict a perfect composition for a milky way that wasn’t yet visible. I chose my location, shot my foreground and waited. Cold. Alone and in the dark.

It’s is really difficult to describe the incredible feeling of that Icelandic morning. I was wandering in the silence, with the snow up to my knees in a insane stillness, when suddenly I felt a cold breeze on my face. So I looked at the sea, and on the horizon line I saw a violent snow storm that was quickly approaching. I knew that I had to run to my car, but it was impossible as I was simply hypnotized by this white beauty.
For me Iceland is like Ulysses mermaids ..with the difference that I don’t want to resist to them.
