Trapped steam beneath a river of lava accumulates a tremendous amount of pressure until it escapes in an instantaneous explosion of a lava, creating a one of a kind, airborne abstract. These lava bubbles are extremely rare, and are by far, my favorite aspect of volcanic activity to shoot, as you never know what you’re gonna get… kinda like a box of chocolates. Well, not really. 😉

A thin river of pahoehoe lava snakes its way to the sea at the Ki ocean entry in Kalapana, island of Hawai‘i. Compositionally, I hate this image, but I’ll take what I can get while standing on extremely rocky ground, no pun intended. 🙂

Miles, my BIG bruddah (yes, he’s VERY BIG), is getting the shot at the Kupapa‘u ocean entry in Kalapana, island of Hawai‘i. Very memorable outing with a couple other bruddahs of mine, Ryan Dyar and Tom Kuali‘i. Nothing like shooting lava with great friends whom I consider to be three of the best photographers around. 🙂
