Alpine Paradise by landESCAPEphotography

A dusting of snow covers Yosemite Valley during an early-season storm, taken last week. Several familiar landmarks are visible, from different angles. This is a 19-image panorama grid encompassing more than an 180-degree field of view.

In my mind, landscape photography goes hand-in-hand with exploring and enjoying nature — not with checking boxes off a list, or collecting stamps that other people create. I urge you to get outside and experience our amazing planet, without a specific photo or experience in mind, and I can all but promise you will come home with an incredible experience and unique photo.

Eruption by landESCAPEphotography

Once in a while, Mother Nature stops me in my tracks with my jaw hanging open. This was one of those moments.

A friend and I were led here by an #escaype forecast for a burn above low fog, and got both 🙂

shout-out to Kristal Leonard for inspiring me to explore this area for the last couple years.

Into Thin Air by landESCAPEphotography

Just in case anyone still uses 500px 😉

We had an incredible sunset with low fog at the Golden Gate last week. I had my eyes on Battery Spencer, this low and close vantage point, but it was fogged in when I arrived. After hiking around for an hour, I noticed the fog had lowered, so I booked it back down to Spencer and grabbed some shots before we got socked in again. Here is one of my favorites.

I often have issues with shots from this spot being left-heavy, but hopefully the clouds balance things out 🙂

Even the #escaype model had some trouble forecasting this fog, but we noticed it out to sea during the day and sent out some alerts, knowing there would be a high cloud burn to the south. Thanks for bearing with us through the hiccups, guys!

I’ve been chasing fog around SF for over a year and I’ve only seen it look like this once. Ironically, the fog retreated just a few minutes before, and I packed up my bags and started the hike back to my car, thinking I’d gotten hosed… then I turned around and saw this happening, and bolted back down the hill to catch it.

Fog season is almost back. Want to join us in chasing weather like this? Ask me for more info on getting invited to #escaype 🙂

This is Olstinden, the same iconic peak you see from a much wider angle in most images from this area.

Here is a panorama from this sunrise.

The Milky Way seen through a cave on the California coast. Captured fully in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago.

It can be tough to get a clear night for astrophotography on the coast, but we’ve gotten all our shots on the first try, thanks to #escaype forecasts 🙂

This Yosemite thunderstorm went out with a bang. It dumped about an inch of hail in the Yosemite high country and turned Tuolumne meadows white. As it cleared out at sunset, it left fog trails in the meadows, glowing mammatus clouds, and a rainbow over Lembert Dome behind us. You can see some leftover hail in the foreground. We forecasted the sunset (it was our second wild sunset in a row) and it was great to watch it with some fellow Escaypers, but the hail was a nice surprise 🙂

This is a pano of four single exposures @16mm. Thanks for stopping by!

Upper Cathedral Lake, Yosemite. Shot about five minutes before “Her Majesty”. Single exposure.

#escaype did the heavy lifting for this one… all we had to do was drive 4 hours, hike 4 miles, and take some pictures 🙂

Livin’ on the Edge by landESCAPEphotography

For the hour before this sunset, a few friends and I were running around this area in Big Sur like chickens with our heads cut off, past one cove after another, trying to find a sea stack that screamed “Big Sur” at us in capital letters. I was running out of time and plopped my gear down here. It wasn’t quite what I had in mind, but most of my shots that go as planned end up like crap, so maybe that wasn’t a bad thing 🙂
