The nicest time to walk around in Kyoto is after sunset when everybody has gone and you can walk around Gion and Higashiyama almost alone. You can only hear the cicadas during summer in the heart of the city. Kyoto, summer 2015.

Autumn is coming. Takayama, Japan by PAkDocK

Autumn strikes in the Japanese Alps sooner than in the rest of the country.
While it was still summer in the rest of Japan during September, in Takayama you could start to notice the cold wind and the red leaves.
