Structures by Pcoskun

Going back through this years portfolio and thought I would open this one up to process. I have always been attracted to golden lit dunes, so when I made a short detour to the dunes in death valley earlier this year I knew what I had in mind. I typically dislike wind a great deal, especially if I am out photographing. However, this is one of those places where blowing winds can really create some dynamic conditions. It was actually very very calm on this evening, not the slightest bit of wind, which I was still ok with as it left beautiful textures on the dunes. I really wanted to emphasize the light on the dunes, so I pushed the contrast up quite a bit here. I ended up enjoying the end result here, but going through this portfolio of sand dunes has given me many more ideas to execute more images from this incredible place.

Golden Zebra by Pcoskun

This is a photograph I took while I visited the sand dunes in Death Valley earlier this year. I spent almost an entire day just wandering around what seemed like endless hills of sand. I found myself far away from everything, everyone. I literally felt like I was the only person for hundreds of miles. The only sounds were my footsteps across the soft sand and the occasional slight breeze. It was one of the most peaceful places I have ever been. When I decided to not go any further, I surveyed my surroundings and was overwhelmed by beautiful golden sand dunes in every direction. My wide angle never made it out of the camera bag, and I roamed around with my zoom lens seeing what types of scenes I could compress together. Just on the opposite side of the dune I was standing on, I noticed these beautiful ripples that were being highlighted by the low sun and their shadows. I started snapping away with a huge grin on my face. I was in my element, in the zone if you will. Shapes and patterns were popping out at me left and right and the clear sky couldn’t have worked any better for these types of shots. While I have always wanted to get the sand blowing in the golden light during heavy winds, I feel like I was somewhat lucky in that all the ripples and patterns were in tact the entire time I was on the dunes. It’s just one of those places that I know I will keep coming back to looking for new images and angles. Anyways, hope you enjoy!

Hills of Gold by Pcoskun

A little break from the lush greens of the PNW and to something I am more familiar with…The desert! This image was from a brief trip to Death Valley specifically to photograph these dunes. Despite their popularity, I had never visited them. I had a few particular images in mind and kept my telephoto lens attached hoping to compress the many layers of the dunes. As the sun began to set above the mountains, the dunes began to catch the golden light and the shadows began to play with it. There is just something about the play between light and shadow I find so appealing.
