Hooker Lake

Standing before Mt Cook in the icy waters of Hooker Lake. Not as silly as it sounds with appropriate waders on 🙂

Beneath The Black And Purple by tpoulton001

It’s amazing how we have boogey locations that always fail us with conditions and locations that always produce the most epic light. Mount Cook in New Zealand is notorious for bad weather and so many people walk away with nothing. I’m blessed with the most amazing luck and have amassed a fine collection of images from the highest peak in New Zealand, all you have to do is search Mount Cook on 500px you’ll find some of that luck. Yesterdays sunset and astro was no exception, with light wispy clouds, all purple and red and the way the light captured the peak, took my breath away. Conditions were perfect with only a light wind and the temperature was a comfortable 10°, plenty of Steinlarger to get us through the night and only the wildlife to keep us company.

Rush Hour by tpoulton001

Aoraki / Mount Cook

With Hooker Lake at the highest level I’ve ever seen and 60 – 70km winds the ferocious water at the mouth of the river was insane. Mt Cook locally know as the Sky Father turned on an incredible show with clouds dancing around the peak and catching the finally light of the day.

Captured using the Schneider 28mm Tilt Shift with my shift-flip technique, stitching 2 frames for a vertical pano. Benefits of this technique is natural vignetting of the lens, perfect stitching and nice overlap.

Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand… by dkphotographyaustralia

One thing we’ve always wanted to cross off our bucket list is something unique from this incredible spot. On our last trip to NZ we failed miserably. We camped out here for a few days in our Wilderness Motorhomes New Zealand & every morning & afternoon we made the hike up to the base of Mt Cook in hope of capturing something special.
On each attempt we were greeted with a different scene (some good, some bad) & on a few nights we were given some clear skies for astro shots (we cant wait to share those), but on this one afternoon, we were greeted with something we will never forget. With not a breath of wind, this colourful pastel sky, a few icebergs & an almost near perfect reflection, we just sat there with our mouths open in shock at what was before us.
We hope you all like it & as always, we’d love to hear what you think!

Road to Aoraki by All4Nature

Dear Friends,
Presenting a shot from South Island, NewZealand. It was a spectacular sight to see the sunset over Mount Cook. It had been a dull cloudy evening so far and I thought of doing some long-exposure but just before sunset the sky lit up and we had some amazing cloud formations.
This is shot on the road to Mount Cook village after we cross the Glentanner park.
Coming to the technical aspects, it is a 2 shot picture for depth of field and perspective. The road is shot with a 12mm and the mountains are at 105 mm.
Have a great weekend.

Antithesis by everlookphotography

Mount Cook
New Zealand

This is a fairly commonly shot location of which I am sure many others have similar compositions. I know in my mind, I had Kah Kit Yoong’s version in my mind. But mostly these days, I just shoot and whatever influences me consciously or subconsciously results in the end product. Mostly, I’m happy with what I’m doing and try not to let negativity get in the way.

I find I often write about what I try to avoid. Here’s something I came up with tonight:

What I’ve never seen, I assume
What I cannot achieve, consumes
This is my photographer’s creed
My armchair passion and deed

When my flimsy truth is caught out
I decline to accede , I lash out
This is my photographer’s etiquette
A leash on thoughts unkept

When I don’t succeed I accuse
What I never experienced is yours to lose
This is my photographer’s envy
That the world owes it all to me

Moody Nuns by everlookphotography

Wakefield Falls
New Zealand

This is the run off from Wakefield Falls which overlooks the Nuns Veil just south of Tasman Lake. The tip of the lake is just visible in the distance. South of this location, the sunrise was a threatening to blow up but in the mountains, the clouds ruled. This spot is a fun 1km rock scramble and if there wasn’t so much ice, a good wade into wakefield falls itself (100m behind me in this shot) would have been a similar experience to the Icelandic Glujfurjarfoss.

On a side note, I’ve noticed a strong bias toward panoramic shots becoming popular on 500px with the new layout so my prediction is that not many people will even see this shot. It’s one of my favourites from the trip but perhaps that’s because it was a fresh viewpoint (just like the previous Isthmus peak shot)
