Redback Spider by intrepidphotos

Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths . An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female ‘digests’ the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Shot was taken with a 100mm macro lens. NSW, Australia

Having grown up and spent the better part of my life roaming this part of the Australian coastline I’m surprised it took me this long to finally photograph this location, after all, it was a location I had wanted to visit with my camera for some time.

I knew that it was a location which would be tricky to access on a high tide so while in the area for my Christmas break I was excited to see that a low tide was finally coinciding with sunrise. That sorted and we were ready to go.

The first shot I took was from deeper in the cave right on sunrise and for this shot I repositioned myself slightly forward to take advantage of the rising sun and it’s warm penetrating light.

Whilst making a terrific sunrise location I can also huge potential in this cave for a clear night – I love keeping the options open.

View large and, as always, thanks for looking!

It’s the first day of 2016 and I’m excited to finally have a new image – it’s been too long.

I’m looking forward to what 2016 has to bring, professionally and personally. For now though – I just need to continue soaking up all the sun I can before returning to the office in a few days.

Have a wonderful 2016 everyone!

Freedom by Dean_Maguire

After looking through my images of late, it was apparent that they were becoming too crowded and messy for B&W pictures (my opinion). Therefore with this image I slowed everything down and took in the scene with the main focus point in mind. This also followed over the post production, due to slowing the process down I was able to capture the right exposure and light so very little post was necessary.

Redhead Beach Lightning

I chose my vantage point at Redhead Bluff last night just before sunset. As the storm slowly made its way up the coast, mother nature put on an intense display of lightning. This image is a single 20 second exposure.
