Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland by EuropeTrotter

It is one of the most photographed landscapes in the world. The Old Man Storr is a spectacular pinnacle of rock on the Isle of Skye in Scotland that’s surrounded by stunning views. Think rocky hills next to gorgeous green grassy slopes and then visions of water beyond. The hike to the pinnacle’s foot is just 1 mile, making it a relatively easy walk. How did the rocky pinnacles form? The weight of basalt lava on sedimentary rocks of the earlier Jurassic age caused massive landslides. The hills are made of horizontal flows of the basaltic lava, built on top of each other.

Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland by EuropeTrotter

This is properly one of the most famous walks on Isle of Skye …and definitely the busiest !
The Storr is the craggy summit atop the grand cliffs behind the famous pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr. Its ascent escapes from the busiest paths round the Old Man and offers spectacular views. Dominating the scene and visible fom many more parts of the islands, the Storr is the hill immediately west of the Old Man and rising to 719 metres with dramatic cliffs on its eastern flank.
The “Old Man” is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. As part of the Trotternish ridge the Storr was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.

Old man of Storr by Lichtjagd

Old Man of Storr …
The climb to the Old Man of Storr, in the morning at 5.30 clock, has shown me that it is time to have a little work on my fitness and my packing list. Who needs up there a four hundred mm Tele? It would have been better if I had not arrived there sweating wet to the bone, I would have not so frozen and would not have to build up my tripod with trembling hands ….
But the moment of sunrise at the Old man was every drop of sweat value and I would do it again at any time (next time get up a bit earlier and then without hectic rush and
running …)

Old Man of Storr…

Description:

Taken last summer on the Quiraing, Isle of Skye, Scotland. The place really is magical and absolutely breathtaking, if I could only visit one spot on the Isle of Skye it would be the Quiraing. I’ve taken the photo just before the heaviest rainfall I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life, everything was soaked but luckily my camera survived. The mixture of perfectly soft and even light, the amazing storm clouds and of course the framing / location itself make this to one of my favourite pictures I’ve ever taken. The photo was taken with a canon 600d and 18-55 IS II kit lens.

Highland Spring by AlisterBenn

It’s the best part of an hour from the road to this view point and you never really know when you set out before first light how the day’s going to turn out.

When I was up there with a one to one client the light erupted for about 40 seconds. Long enough for us to make a couple of exposures and then the rain hammered it down!

Serendipity and well worth our efforts.
