Travel Photographer Of The Year – III by MarselvanOosten

Three days ago I won the overall title Travel Photographer Of The Year 2015 with two black and white portfolios – a landscape portfolio and a wildlife portfolio. Yesterday I posted the second of four images from the landscape portfolio, today the third one.

All four images were shot on a scouting trip last year in the swamps of Louisiana – off the beaten tracks, and far away from all the usual photographic hot spots. This is surely one of the most magical places on this planet.

If you don’t want to wait for the rest of the series, you can also check out the entire story behind the images on my blog: http://ow.ly/3yzTBj

Two years ago we decided to check out the swamps in Louisiana and Texas to see if we could set up the world’s first Cypress Swamp photo tour there. Last month we returned from our second scouting trip to this amazing place, where we searched for additional locations, finalized the accommodation, and fine tuned the logistics.

Somewhere next week we will officially announce the new trip. As usual, we will first contact our most frequent flyers to give them first choice, but after that we’ll open the tours for the rest of you as well.

Special thanks to Daniella for her help setting up these shots.

Namibia Untamed by MarselvanOosten

We are proud to announce that photographer Ryan Dyar has joined the Squiver team. Ryan is known for his atmospheric landscape images and his popular post processing video tutorials. Not only that, he is also a great guy to travel with and to learn from, which is why we asked him in the first place.

Due to popular demand we have added a second Namibia Untamed tour for 2016, and Ryan will lead that tour. If you are not familiar with Ryan’s work, then first: shame on you, and second: http://ift.tt/HjSx9r

If you want to visit Namibia, look no further. We were the first company to offer specialized photography tours to Namibia and there is no better organized Namibia tour out there. Also, we are still the only one that offers microlight flights over the famous Namibian sand dunes.

This image was shot on one of those microlight flights, an amazing experience. Microlight airplanes are the best way to take aerial photographs. Better than hot air balloons, as they only take you where the wind blows. Better than airplanes, as they go way too fast, have to stay very high, and you often have to shoot through low quality, scratched windows. And better than helicopters, because of those same scratched plastic windows, and you can only shoot in one direction. From a microlight you can shoot in all directions, also straight down.

What you see here is a gyrocopter, basically a two person helicopter without roof or windows. We used one of those for a few years, but we no longer do. I asked my pilot to fly above them to be able to include the gyro in my photograph for sense of scale. The photographic opportunities are endless when you’re flying over this sea of sand, sculpted by the light.

Kingdom Of Ice by MarselvanOosten

Antarctica is the ultimate wilderness on this planet. To sail and walk around there is simply mind boggling. To get this shot I climbed up a snow covered mountain, without snow shoes – it took a while 🙂 I like to include small elements in big landscapes to add scale and a sense of adventure. When I saw one of our zodiacs coming in the distance, I knew it would make for a much better picture than a shot without it. Only now can you really appreciate the amount of ice, and the size of it. We are nothing.

The great thing about Antarctica is that it’s a dynamic landscape, mainly because of the ice. I’ve been to Antarctica three seasons in a row, often multiple trips per year, and every time the landscape looked different. One day a bay is completely filled with icebergs, the next day it’s all on the open sea. For a photographer it doesn’t get much better than that.

If you would like to experience being on that zodiac yourself, then you’re in luck – we had a cancellation.

The trip date is: 29 November – 9 December 2015.

This trip filled up very quickly when we first opened it, so if Antarctica is on your bucket list, here’s your chance. We will be traveling on a brand new ship with state of the art stabilising technology, so crossing the infamous Drake Passage should be a breeze compared to all the other vessels.

If you’re interested in joining us in a few months time on a landscape and wildlife photography trip of a lifetime, don’t hesitate and send us an email now. If you’d like to have some more information first, please check out my website for more pictures, a tour impression video clip, and a detailed PDF:
