Namibia Untamed
Northern Lights Finale – With Arild Heitmann

As my whirlwind year of 2015 rapidly comes to a close, I’ve already got my sights set on 2016. Big trips back to Norway with my homies Arild and Stian of LofotenTours, two back to back trips to Namibia to work with the Squiver team, Iceland with my wife and great friends, and Alaska for some off-roading adventure. It’s going to be a fantastic year, but the thing I’m stoked on most isn’t the locations… it’s the people I get to share them with. I get just as (if not more) excited about spending the time with friends as I do the actual shooting.

Marcel Van Oosten was kind enough to honor me with the privilege to lead a tour to Namibia for him next year… I’m guaranteeing it will be epic. Also my good friend Arild Heitmann and I will be leading another crazy tour next March to shoot the Lofoten Islands… it’s always a successful trip. Check out the links above for all the info you need!

Happy Holidays everyone.

Sort of a weird comp here, I’ll admit. I for sure didn’t knock this one out of the park, but I was trying to include the little swirl on the left side. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t… I’m too dumb to figure it out! Got some pretty sweet light though, which is good because I’m a half-wit and easily excited over things like colors in the sky and swirly things in the water. I think most people who know me well will agree that I should be wearing a helmet most of the time.

Got some big tours with really cool dudes who don’t wear helmets coming up next year. Finally home from almost a month in Norway. Holy crap, what a trip. The first half was spent leading one of the best tours I’ve ever led with my dear friend Arild Heitmann. The forecast looked pretty bad leading up to it, but at the last minute it changed, the skies cleared, and one of the best solar storms in the past decade gave us amazing shows 6 nights in a row. I honestly think some of the guys on the trip were starting to get bored with how much Aurora we got… which I’m sure pisses off my wife, because when she flew out to meet me there the following weeks it pissed rain and we could barely get any northern lights to save our lives. But the stormy and moody light that followed made for awesome shooting as well.

This is from one of the nights where we stayed out shooting and didn’t get back to our cabins until after 3am. I even think some of the dudes stayed up for another hour or so to have celebratory beers after an epic night of shooting. Maniacs.

Arild and I have another big tour available for next March where we will be shooting the crazy mountains of the Lofoten Islands with light and aurora, but hopefully with a little more snow! It will fill fast, so check it out soon!

Granite Eye by RyanDyar

Just a simple long exposure over the Alabama Hills, but I more wanted to post about a very cool tour I’m involved with.

Way back in my early 20’s I discovered the work of Marsel Van Oosten. He quickly became one of my photography idols. Even to this day, when my photography buddies and I play the “who are your top 5 favorite shooters” game, Marsel is always at the front of the list.

So when he asked me if I’d like to come join his team at Squiver, I was absolutely blown away. One of the biggest honors of my career. If you told that 20-something kid with a camera that he’d be working for one of his idols in 10 years, he would have scoffed… and maybe called you a name or two. But now it’s official and I can say that I’m on board to lead his 2016 Namibia Untamed tour!

Ok, enough ass kissing. Namibia really is a photographers dream and this is THE BEST and most respected tour to the area. Beyond The Veil Of Death VI by MarselvanOosten

+++ PLEASE VIEW ON BLACK +++

This is the sixth image from my award-winning series, but I never officially entered this one as it didn’t add to the flow. However, as a standalone I think it works quite well with that receding tree line.

In terms of post processing my main concern was to keep the contrast down. I converted the shot to black and white and deliberately did not set the black point and the white point. I wanted to make this look like a pencil drawing, so it needed to stay sort of grayish.

Conditions like this a pretty rare in Deadvlei, but I hope that we’re going to be lucky again next year.

Due to popular demand we have added a second Namibia Untamed tour for 2016, and exceptional landscape photographer Ryan Dyar will lead that tour.

If you want to visit Namibia, look no further. We were the first company to offer photography tours to Namibia, and there is no better organized Namibia tour out there. Also, we are still the only company that offers microlight flights over the famous Namibian sand dunes.

If you’re interested in joining Ryan to Namibia, please check out our website for more information, images, video clips, and a very detailed tour PDF: http://www.squiver.com

Hope to see you there!

Namibia Untamed by MarselvanOosten

We are proud to announce that photographer Ryan Dyar has joined the Squiver team. Ryan is known for his atmospheric landscape images and his popular post processing video tutorials. Not only that, he is also a great guy to travel with and to learn from, which is why we asked him in the first place.

Due to popular demand we have added a second Namibia Untamed tour for 2016, and Ryan will lead that tour. If you are not familiar with Ryan’s work, then first: shame on you, and second: http://ift.tt/HjSx9r

If you want to visit Namibia, look no further. We were the first company to offer specialized photography tours to Namibia and there is no better organized Namibia tour out there. Also, we are still the only one that offers microlight flights over the famous Namibian sand dunes.

This image was shot on one of those microlight flights, an amazing experience. Microlight airplanes are the best way to take aerial photographs. Better than hot air balloons, as they only take you where the wind blows. Better than airplanes, as they go way too fast, have to stay very high, and you often have to shoot through low quality, scratched windows. And better than helicopters, because of those same scratched plastic windows, and you can only shoot in one direction. From a microlight you can shoot in all directions, also straight down.

What you see here is a gyrocopter, basically a two person helicopter without roof or windows. We used one of those for a few years, but we no longer do. I asked my pilot to fly above them to be able to include the gyro in my photograph for sense of scale. The photographic opportunities are endless when you’re flying over this sea of sand, sculpted by the light.

I don’t request this often, because normally I don’t care much and I’m sure you don’t either… But please view this one on black.

A fairly standard sunrise shot from Two Medicine Lake here, nothing groundbreaking… just some pretty sweet light over a pretty gorgeous little lake. It’s having places like this to shoot, even on relax-days when not hiking into the backcountry, that will always keep me coming back to Glacier National Park. It’s become my home away from home.

Anyways, I’m gearing up for some more arctic travel here in a few weeks with my good friend Arild Heitmann. We also have another trip next March that is filling fast! I’m willing to bet these trips to the Arctic will be even more productive than our last. I can’t wait!

Also, I just released a new post-processing instructional video a little while back. It’s packed with some unique techniques and theories about processing you may not find anywhere else. People seem to really be enjoying the videos and have had nothing but great things to say, so I *think* they are helping people… it’s been awesome to see the many before/after shots people have been emailing me. Be sure to check the videos out if you are into that sort of thing. It’s all on my website, as well as more photos, photo tour info, processing instruction via Skype like everyone else is doing, etc, etc.

A shot from a while ago I never got around to posting. Fairly simple scene here of Carson Mountain in the early spring while snowshoeing around looking for something a little different from the area.

This was a few exposures blended together for depth of field, a bit of dodging and burning to enhance the fog coming off the lake in the background, and a plethora of luminosity adjustments to dial in the contrast where I liked it. Maybe 20min of processing total.

Pins and Needles by RyanDyar

It took me a few minutes to figure out exactly what the hell kept falling on my head while I was shooting this day. Turned out to be nesting birds on the cliff behind me dropping rocks on me in protest to my presence… sounds a lot like my lovelife prior to meeting the gal I was lucky enough to marry a couple weeks ago.

The Smoking Room by RyanDyar

Smoke from the surrounding wildfires during my two week trip to Glacier NP made itself VERY well known. All day long it was there like some loud drunk frat-dude saying “look at me! I’m here to screw up your good time, bro!”

Fortunately, we were able to use the smoke to our advantage a few times. The smoke can do interesting things to the atmosphere and light color, so not all hope was lost. The haziness in this particular shot was from the fires hundreds of miles away in Washington state… it made the trip across two states to try to screw up my party, but I think I made it work still. Not the most original image ever taken, and a bit predictable for sure… but whatever, I dig it.

Anyways, one of the tours I’m leading in Norway with my good friends Arild and Stian is almost filled, so if you are interested in that trip, now is the time to check it out! I’m willing to bet this trip to the Arctic will be even more productive than our last. I can’t wait!
