Little crofter’s cottage, Shieldaig, Scotland by EuropeTrotter

Happy New Year 2016 !

A beautiful little crofter’s cottage overlooking Loch Shieldaig on the road from Torridon to Applecross. Historically, the crofter and his family would have existed on livestock and fishing, with root crops grown for the winter. This little house is now used as a holiday cottage.

Highland cattle are a Scottish cattle breed. The hair on Highland cattle gives protection during the cold winters. Highland cattle were first imported into Australia by the mid-19th century by Scottish migrants then into Canada in the 1880s.

The Highland Pony is a native Scottish pony, and is one of the largest of the mountain and moorland pony breeds of the British Isles. Its pedigree dates back to the 1880s. It was once a workhorse in the Scottish mainland and islands, but today is used for driving, trekking and general riding. They are very hardy and tough.

The Clearances by AlisterBenn

Once, most of the Scottish Highlands was one huge forest; the home of bears, beaver, wolves, Lynx and more.

Within the last 200 years the vast majority of it has been felled.

Thankfully, the tide may be turning and once again Scotland is being forested with native species. A new dawn perhaps?

The Old Forest by AlisterBenn

Once upon a time, Scotland was covered in this magnificent forest – the industrial revolution saw the end of that – fuel for the fires and progress.

Then came the sheep and the Highland Clearances – a mass exodus that saw America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand grow in numbers and the birth of Scottish ancestry.

Thankfully, Scotland is being forested once again and the old forest is becoming new forest. Good news for Scotland and for me.
